The club room

Look around the hub

A few evenings from the club room on Hutchinson Street, photographed with the permission of everyone who appears in them.

Couches and tables

The club room at its busiest

Behind the pictures

Look closely and you will see the mentors

These photographs were taken with the permission of everyone in them, usually in the quiet minutes before a game began. Look closely and you will find a mentor in nearly every frame, crouched beside a couch or leaning over a table with a rulebook open.

We take pictures slowly and sparingly, because a club night is meant to be played rather than recorded. If you would rather not appear, tell Cassandra and she will remove any picture of you within a day.

The room looks different on each night of the week. Tuesday is all screens and soft light, Wednesday brings out the long tables, Thursday is slow and quiet, and on a Saturday league night the couches fill, the tea urn runs hot and the noise rises. The pictures catch every one of those moods, though none can catch the sound of a whole room groaning at the same missed jump.

  • Tuesdays

Screens, soft light and shared controllers.

  • Wednesdays

Long tables and the clatter of dice and cards.

  • Saturdays
