How the last season finished, and what the winners chose
The last league final was decided with four seconds to spare, in front of a room that had stopped breathing. This is how it went.
Four teams, one screen and a very quiet room
The finalists were Mild Panic, Tea Break, The Last Checkpoint and the Wobbly Pixels, a team of four who had not met before the draw and had not lost a Saturday since. The rest of the club sat along the couches and the back tables, with cups of tea going cold in their hands.
The final challenge was a cooperative puzzle level that nobody in the room had seen. Each team had one attempt, a mentor beside them and a rule sheet in Deborah's careful handwriting. For the first twenty minutes nothing seemed to happen. Then the room began to murmur.
The last attempt
The Wobbly Pixels went last. Their quietest player, who had joined the club on a Thursday only a few months earlier, spotted the pattern in the floor tiles and called it out. The other three scrambled, and they cleared the final door with four seconds on the clock. The couch erupted so loudly that Deborah had to ask for quiet before reading the result.
What the champions chose
As the season winners, the Wobbly Pixels painted their team name on the league board beside the tea corner and held the title for the next six weeks. They also chose the game for a Friday night, and what they picked was a gentle building game that suited the whole room, including two people who had never held a controller. By the end of the night one of them had asked for a go at the harder level, and the room cheered as if she had won the final herself.
The moments we remember
- Mild Panic naming their own team's mistake aloud, and applauding it.
- Tea Break taking a full tea break in the middle of their attempt, and recovering anyway.
- The Last Checkpoint passing a single controller four ways in one minute.
- A newcomer on the couch asking whether it was too late to join the next season.
It was not too late, of course. It never is.
